New York – Renowned New York City DJ Mister C has passed away, confirmed by radio station Hot97 on Wednesday.
Mister C, whose real name was Kelvin Lebron, was a significant figure in hip-hop. He was a DJ for Big Daddy Kane and contributed to the rise of the notorious B.I.G. – helping launch the rapper into superstardom.
Mister C’s “Throwback at Noon” show on Hot97 was one of the most popular programs of its time. Recently, he was on “94.7 The Block” with Odisee.
CEO Chuck Creekmur of AllHipHop.com said, “He was in the broadcast of Hot97, shaping culture and molding. At that time, we were just like cassette tapes… and these cassette tapes floated all over the city, so this was our email to speak,” Mister C had said at the time.
His artistry began in Brooklyn, where his heart always remained.
Creekmur said, “He called himself the ‘Finisher’ because he was the one who would end the set, end the party.”
On Wednesday, his family announced his death, sparking reactions from the music world, including DJ Jazzy Jeff, who posted, “Rest in peace DJ Mister C.”
Mister C knew he was loved. Creekmur said, “Wherever he went, he felt that love from our community.”
Mister C was 57 years old. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
